They found that monitoring of formaldehyde levels in pathology labs was infrequent, with nearly three-quarters of sites measuring airborne levels once a week or less. Shockingly, 70% of sites regularly exceeded the safe exposure limits set by the EU, indicating a potential health risk for staff.
Despite not exceeding the UK's higher exposure limit, researchers emphasized that formaldehyde is associated with various health issues at concentrations well below the UK standard. They recorded an airborne formaldehyde level above 2 ppm at least once in 12 months in 30% of the labs.
